RjDj Reviews

WIREDWired Magazine Issue 17.02.2009 Playlist / What’s wired this month

Tune in and trip out with RjDj, an iPhone music app that transforms ambient noises into ear-bending soundscapes. The clattering of keyboards, the rumble of buses, even the ins and outs of your breath are multiplied, pitch-shifted, looped, and twisted on the fly into an aural mosaic. It’s like taking a leisurely walk inside Brian Eno’s brain

The app is just totally awesome. one feature that i miss is a connection to the mail.app of the iphone that lets you send your recorded files to any email adresse.

  3. Marian says:

Very cool application. The feature that I miss is a possibility to transform recordings to mp3 and email them or transfer through USB on the PC.

If you don’t have it, get it. It’s an awesome experience!

  4. Eraldo Bernocchi says:

I just sent a message to Michael that I want to share here…

“I just got your application for my Iphone..and I am simply speechless!
It is one of the most revolutionary things I ever came across in my life as a musician and composer.
Since the 80’s I’ve been researching in various fields inclusind sensory perception alteration as well music for personal rituals
and this is now a reality thanks to your amazing creativity as well the Iphomne technology.
I couldn’t imagine, after more than more or less 100 albums , to be amazed and blown away by something new.

  5. Nick says:

I’m trying to use RJDJ, but the volume is so low as to be inaudible. Other apps play at the proper volume, but not RJDJ. I’m on a first gen iPhone, using headphones without a mic on them, so that might be the problem? Shouldn’t it default to the mic on the phone itself?

  6. kc! says:

PLEASE give us more scenes!!! I really want the amen breaks and the scratch scenes to play with! I posted feedback on LEGENDmag: http://LEGENDmag.net/thelegendonline/2008/10/10/rjdj-the-soundtrack-to-your-life/

  7. haken says:

Sad… I have bought this app, paid the money and it doesn’t work. Few seconds after I run it it comes back to SpringBoard. I use latest 2.1 firmware… I am sad;(

  8. Alessandro Capuzzo says:

hallo, downloaded and “somehow” tested. Like it so much. Would like to know the scenes content in deep, and the way to arrange them also. 1st question, the chance to change the scale intervals, in all of the scenes.
Another technical quest. How can I play with earbuds (as You suggest) and listen to the line out, contemporally?
Thanks a lot for your work

  9. Nick says:

Followup on that low audio issue:

I got it to play at regular volume for a bit, but when I reopened, it would not. The different is noticeable in the volume display: when it works, “headphones” appears at the top of the volume display, and when it doesn’t, there is just empty space at the top.

Probably some iPhone 2.1 firmware bs.

  10. Alessandro Capuzzo says:

sorry, I forgot an issue. Also input ha so be understood. Mic or line or guitar in can work ? And if yes, do the chance have some restriction ? Thanks a lot

  11. Riccardo says:

    This is simply amazing!!!

Nothing bad to say about it, I just suggest, as a musician and composer, to put in it a way to export the recordings, that would be great!

By the way…thatk you very much guys for your little jewel!!

  12. Almar van der Krogt says:

I RJDJ-ed in car today and it was brilliant. The car became a soundmachine: revving, opening/closing powerwindows, switching radio-channels, etc. I love it!

  13. Digital Tools says:

Thanks for this awesome technology. I think the scene-marketplace will be soon very active. I reported RJDJ at my zine: http://digitaltools.node3000.com/blog/rjdj_-_the_iphone_will_addict_you_to_music_again.php

I have RJDJ installed, but it doesn’t work properly. I currently have the single version to try the application, but it crashes everytime on startup.
It also crashes after reinstalls or iPhone resets, while other apps function properly. Maybe an update? I have 2.1 installed.

I’m getting the same problem as Nick.
I’m using in-ear earbuds without a microphone. The program does work, but at full volume I can only barely hear the sounds.

Anyone else get the problem/ know how to fix it?

  18. AJ says:

oh man…..this is totally amazing..love it, thanks all you guys have came up with this app, anyways.. just wondering how can I get more senses? and how I install into my iphone? thanks a lot

  19. Bob says:

I downloaded the RjDj album last night. Amazing, intense, addictive! I am hooked completely, and much like any other drug…I need more! The potential here is astounding. Thank you for this amazing piece of interactive art. Keep up the great work!

  20. moses says:

please make this for the computer (Mac OS X) as well! this is awesome!
    pretty please?

  21. Chris says:

Hi – I like this very much, and agree with the Burning Man clip that it’s potentially revolutionary – even if this passes, the idea itself will persist, and this is a great start.

I wrote a few notes of my first experiences – but to summarise, I’ll be getting used to a reverberating reality over the next few weeks. More importantly, it’s the sort of thing you look forward to showing other people too, to see their reactions.

No problems with low volume or crashing that others have. My iphone is on build v2.1 (2nd generation).

  22. Eric says:

I’m really starting to love this app. I spent a whole hour watching tv with this app running in my ears. The WorldQuantizer scene kept me ejaculating sounds for over an hour while I was watching a movie! This is addicting.

  23. Mike Creighton says:

RjDj is easily the most innovative, inspiring, and creative application on the iPhone to date. You could call it a generative audio application, but because if its portable nature and its use of the iPhone’s various inputs, it really transforms your iPhone into a creative augmented reality device.

RjDj is more than an application; it’s an experience.

  24. Angus says:

it would be cool if you could loop your recordings.. if so i’d then be able to lose hours to my own grunting.

    Keep up the fantastic work.

  25. robert says:

really nice. i am working on a reactive sound project at the Interactive Telecommunications Program at NYU but we were crafting custom input devices…using the iPhone as a platform for input and processing through Pd has forced me to rethink our direction.

what is really great is the instantly knowable aspect of the feedback. users don’t need to understand the underlying structure to realize how their actions modify the music. simple. beautiful.

i wrote a scene last night and have been listening to it a lot today. a nice feature would be a repository of user created scenes. maybe have them hosted on a server somewhere and add functionality in RjDj to connect to that server and display the available scenes for installation. it could be really neat to encourage a community of folks creating new material…

  26. thelottery says:

I purchased the “Album” version of this application this morning, and unfortunately it crashes every time I try to launch the app. Very disappointing.

  27. nobi says:

saw the video, all my friends are loving it. but I have the same crashing problem and can’t launch.
    I did turn off/on iPhone.
I also freed up some memory (2GB+).
I tried both single and album version but still no luck.

If there is anyway I can help you correct the problem let me know; you have my e-mail.

  28. piem says:

nobi and thelottery: We are really sorry you are seeing this issue. A few users have seen this bug, and a few workarounds have been reported here: http://trac.rjdj.me/ticket/32 .

We will let you know via email as soon as we have closed this issue.

  29. enkaytee says:

This sort of app is what the iphone was created for. The thought processes behind it and the way it has been put together – simply awesome.

    Can’t praise it highly enough!

Best of luck – this should be number one in the app store very soon!

  30. Sylvain says:

Bought the premium app. One great feature (for musicians) would be to save as multitrack to be able to edit them after

  31. hayden says:

I’m hoping you support the new iPod Touch soon, since you can hook up an external mic to it. I only have an iPod Touch, and I think others might as well, so please support iPod Touch and I’ll go ahead and buy.

    Thanks!

  32. sage says:

Absolutely love this app. When are new scenes coming out? Will they be updates included in the initial fee?

  33. li says:

When the new scene out? Will charge you again?

  34. James says:

Bought Album version today and it crashes at launch every single time. I have rebooted iphone and re-synced etc. Still no luck. Very dissapointing.

  35. big fan says:

Just went cycling through the woods with Eargasm…unbelievable. Hearing the deraileurs click, leaves rustling, and birds singing was fascinating through this app.

Any idea when the new scenes are coming out? I’m also curious if you’ll be charging for these.

  36. anselmo says:

just loaded both apps but both wont work. Installed it from itunes, but still that bug. please let me know how to fix it. Eagerly expecting to use it!!!

  37. anselmo says:

    Hi again

I did a reboot from i-tunes and then it worked. YEAH!!!

  38. Nicholas Adams says:

For those of us anxiously awaiting our new T-mobile g1’s (and as an electronic musician), please tell me you are developing this for use with Android!!!!

  39. cyberjuju says:

    bonne continuation very good appli

  40. Bob says:

i hope to see this app on the android platform on the G1 very soon its looks fun an awesome i would buy it for sure!!!

  41. abavetta says:

I bought the album version. Unfortunately it crashes every time without loading within about 3 seconds. Tried reloading the application from iTunes, rebooting the iPhone, re-purchasing the application from iTunes store, restoring iPhone from backup (a big pain), loading another application after RjDj, some of these actions multiple times, all without success. Please let me know when you have a fix for this problem

  42. markus says:

    I can´t start the programm.
immediatly after starting the programm my iPhone turns back to the home screen.

    A reboot doesn´t bring a solution.

  43. matthieu says:

I am with markus and abavetta. I cannot start the program. I downloaded the album version from itunes. The program starts and then crashes withing a few seconds. I am on a Mac platform. Tried restarting iphone, and resynching.
    Please advise.
    Thanks!

  44. abavetta says:

    This fixed it for me:

iPhone Model(3g) Version 2.1(5F136) Model MB499LL Modem Firmware 02.11.07 English

Finally got it to load by: 1) Deleting RjDj application from iTunes 2) Delete RjDj application from iPhone 3) Reset iPhone. To do this, hold the sleep/wake button and Home buttons until the white Apple logo appears, signifying a reset well done. 4) Quit and restart iTunes 5) Reload RjDj application in iTunes 5) Connect iphone to computer and “Sync” iPhone.

I gave it 4 stars I love it now that’s working for me. Good luck.

  45. Eric Cheng says:

abavetta — that worked for me, too! Thank you…

  46. Jack Morgn says:

It seems what’s really missing is the ability to save in some kind of portable file format so that we can share/use our creations. This would exponentially increase exposure for the product.

More scenes, too please. I like what I’ve got, but I would like more. I thought there would be more, so I feel a little bit ripped off.

OI use a line out to go into the tapedeck of the car when it’s full of friends. Gets trippy and good driving music.

  48. Barclay says:

Absolutely brilliant iPhone app. I had the IT department laughing sharing my iPhone and ear buds. Do not operate heavy machinery with this amazing app playing in your ears — especially eargasm and WorldQuantizer!

  49. Sam F says:

    This is really great!

Here’s a suggestion (I’ll bet you’re getting tons of these….). What if snatches of the generated music that people are listening to (even better if it were the iTunes song people were listening to) were uploaded to you guys with GPS information. Then, if I’m using the app in the same location, I could hear those snatches of music mixed in with what I’m listening to?

It would be like hearing echos of the past, echos of what someone else was listing to on the very same path just earlier in the day? It would truly blow my mind.

It would also really contribute to the social aspect of the app, since other people’s experiences and choices would have an effect on what you were hearing.

  50. Kevin Skaggs says:

    Hello,

First off, I’d just like to say what a wonderful thing you’ve created! On Oct 10 I downloaded the app. then headed for the airport. All I can say is waiting for my flight to start boarding has never been so beautiful!!

I love the app, and only hope you’re in the process (or will be soon) of creating updates and new scenes.

My only two cents that I have is this. Is there a way with “Eargasam” to utilize the touch surface where the graphic is? It would be amazing to be able to control the vocoder-esque chord that appears through out the scene. As well as adding bits of delay feedback and time controls. I’m sure you’ve thought of this, but it would resemble that of the Korg Kaosillator.

    Again, wonderful app. Really!

P.S. “Gridwalker” is amazing on a plane whilst descending into Seattle. The “Fasten seatbelt” tone sends the thing to crazy mode!

  51. Philipp says:

    Hello,

i bought the RJDJ Single and the RJDJ Album – NOTHING WORKS !!!!!!!!!!!!!

    PLEASE FIX THIS !

RJDJ @ my friends iphone work, there comes a black screen and after 5 sec. rjdj is open !

At my iPhone – I click on RJDJ and only a black “Dock” appears, but i still can see my home screen with the icons, no black screen…..

and then the dock disapears and am back at the homescreen!!
*sorry for my english, i am from austria ;)*

  52. Martin says:

Love this app! So much fun. Only suggestions so far: a way of exporting or mailing saved recordings. a way of deleting unwanted scenes and rearranging your favorites in a different order. Great work!

  53. Leslie says:

Works fine with Apple iPhone supplied headset, but the volume drops dramatically using my Sennheisers and built in mic – please FIX.
The only useful scene I found is “World Quantizer”, other scenes included are “tacky” and useless…
Otherwise it is nice and “happy” little app. Certainly not as sophisticated as Brian Eno’s BLOOM, but still OK. 3 out of 5 stars ;)

  54. tbirdparis says:

Nice one.. just like having a portable reaktor inside your own head! (sort of)

I’m sure the app is going to evolve, but I’m going to add to the list of people asking for a way to access the sound recordings made with rjdj… I’ve made tons of recordings already that I want to export and use in my work. Please add this soon..

  55. the sobsister says:

Loving this app. I’m already greedy for more.

Some of the scenes produce extremely subtle effects that are overpowered by street noise and consequently best heard in closed environments, e.g., in a room or car, BUT when in a closed environment, there aren’t as many sounds to generate effects. Vicious cycle. I’m on a 3G iPhone, btw.

I’ll add my vote for ways to use the touchscreen to influence the scene, particularly as regards volume and rhythm.

    Thanks for a great product.

  56. wiibart says:

So looking forward to a appstore update!

    Hope to see in the next udpate;
    - ftp or mail out recordings!
    - updated scenes, Eargasm, World Quantizer

  58. Jeff says:

Another request to get this on the Touch. Sounds like fun!

  59. Johan says:

This app is really great. The feeling I get when I walk around or ride the train listening to this is completely surreal. It changes my perception of familiar environments completely and makes me simultaneously more attentive and completely detached.

Just a tip for people who can’t get it to work: it seems that you have to plug in the headset *first* and *then* launch the app, otherwise it won’t pick up any sound. The instructions probably say this, but it wasn’t obvious to me at first.

  60. Rocco says:

I don’t wanna take my headphones off anymore!!!
This is the most stunning acoustic experience for years!
And I have listened to everything out there…
and as a robot I’m truely addicted to deep electronic soul music.
THIS IS HEAVEN! Thanks for your revolution and THE ONE reason
to must have an iPhone. Keep on, I wish you the fantastic success
you are destined to earn! THANKS!!

  61. cmorra says:

  67. cpram says:

I paid for and downloaded the app from itunes but it doesn’t work. it tries but ends up back at the iphone home screen

  68. Jens Alfke says:

So from what I’ve read now, I gather that it only works with the mic on the standard earbuds, and not with the iPhone’s internal mic? That sucks, because I have no idea where those earbuds are — I have a better pair that I use, so I tossed the originals in a drawer or something. But without those, RjDj isn’t playing any sound at all :-(

I really wish you had given customers some warning about this limitation. I feel slightly ripped off now. Even if I can find those earbuds, I’ll still be in the boat of only being able to enjoy RjDj with earbuds I don’t like to wear.

  69. Jens Alfke says:

Update: I found the mic-enabled earbuds, and the app’s working now! Wheee! It even makes uncomfortable ears worthwhile.

  70. Vincent Hofer says:

Gee, I am getting addicted, I simply can’t get of it, and always keep my headset in my pocket, to experiment more and more. This is just fascinating.

Looking forward to get more scene, dont care if we have to pay for them, good work deserves good money, that is how I work too…

Keep the hard work, and BRAVO

  71. Heau says:

RjFD is a real instruments by itself. I played sax thru different scenes and its amazing.

I see it as a super powerful effect processor. It really makes me want to get into PD and create my own scenes (simple ones like reverbs/delays/modulators to more compliated).

I used my Iphone with a little microbite from redsound. Therefore I can catch interesting loops to work and mix with (and with other Iphone apps like Hang drum, relax, 909 etc…).

So much power in so little space.

Many thanks and I hope to contribute to the community with creative scenes.

    Kind regards,

    theau

  72. Taylor says:

    fantastic app!!!
    For update:
    1. More sound processes
    2. Ability to modify parimeters of the sound files(reverb/delay/echo/chorus/change octave….etc) by moving graphic around via the accelerometer
    3. get rid of the cheesy sounds
    4. Email /download/sound files

    Keep it coming!!!!

  73. craig says:

this is an amazing app and has really inspired me with the music I make. Well done team! Would love to see future features which allow users as get under the hood and alter things like delay times, shuffle, tempo etc as well as obvious extras like recording and scene downloads.

  74. BBDC says:

    Guys,
This is an amazing app…any chance we can see it on android? It would also be excellent if this app could export loops for use with garageband projects or custom ringtones/notifications

  75. downtown.browne says:

Totally amazing guys! Hours of fun to be had.

    Suggestions that would be great:
    1. Ability to transfer recordings to iTunes.
    2. Use the iPhone’s internal mic, so we can all wear some nice Sennheiser or Bose headphones
    3. Ability to change variables of a scene (eg echo/reverb etc… probably much more complicated to write but hey, would be great)
    4. Lots more scenes :)

    Wayz to go guys!

  76. mattias says:

The app (single) doesnt work at all on my iPhone version 2.1. Have tried and reinstall it but nothing.

The app starts and goes black and then shuts down.

  77. M. S. says:

    Brilliant, brilliant, brilliant!

RJDJ is a non-narcotic hallucinogen… As I sat at my desk at work on Friday, with RJDJ running and headphones on, it wasn’t too long before I felt the urge to murmur to myself (and into the mic) semi-consciously and experience the refracted feedback, sliding deeper and deeper into some sort of trance. Two hours later I sat up and found that I had completed all my work (quite well) without being aware of having done it, as I travelled on some sort of mental vacation courtesy of RJDJ. (Just make sure your door stays closed so no one overhears and thinks you’re having a mental breakdown.)

I got RJDJ because of an interest in music-making but this seems like something with more potential than a Koan-type music generator…. Don’t know much about psychology but I feel like RJDJ is enabling me to tap into something subconscious, akin to primal scream therapy or especially transcendental mediation.

The scenes that come with it remind me of the Lexicon Vortex effects unit, but the RJDJ+iPhone portablilty, ease of use and emphasis on the phone’s microphone makes this a very unique and special instrument.

  78. annie says:

do not use this under the influence of acid or other mind altering substances as it will likely send you into a psychosis. I don’t recommend sneezing either. Try deep breathing practices, for a truly meditative experience. Whispering words like “eternal” and “I am” and I think this could be the modern day answer to meditation and enlightment.

    Peace out.

  79. Leslie says:

It is fantastic – as I have mentioned above, but it will and does go out of sync. Also there is NO way of telling what BPM it i running under??? BTW; It seems to me that there can be only four layers of sounds happening at any given time… That would be acceptable if You could have an option to retain the most recent sample and as I have mentioned above, there is NO way to preserve any “previous inputs”… It would be very nice to have the facility of KORG Kaoss 3 including filters, but I could be asking too much or am I..?

  80. Leslie says:

PS; The post above applies to World Quantizer btw and unfortunately, quantizing does not work very well most of the time – it is very unpredictable ;) Perhaps a scene with more predictable quantizing ?

  81. Leslie says:

Sorry, It’s me again… Future request – less random and more user controllable scene (World Quantizer0, Perhaps different one..?

Amazing app! I hope you guys come out with this app on T-Mobile’s G1. Its really amazing what the RJDJ can do, really really anxious to see this application someday in the Android would change the way I listen to music and experience life.

… I want BeardyMan on iPhone… PLEASE KAOSS KORG emulation..?

  85. Jason Forrest says:

    GREAT JOB FELLAS!!!

I’m most excited about this application because it actually allows the user to do something, where most of the other programs usually just let you play with their presets, and while I understand that the user here is limited to the scenes available so far, I understand this will change…

I’m sure you’ll upgrade the recording functions, etc…

Killer job, and I LOVE the design as well! I wish each scene had more of the base design!

I played with this app on my friends i phone and it was a trip all to itself. I would really like this app to be released for the PC. I don’t have an i phone and i don’t plan on getting one but i already have a good gaming PC and i think this would be the most messed up awesome to play with while im gaming. Please please i want this badly for the PC.

  87. kiim says:

Amazing app! I really love it.

But not being able to export the generated files is really annoying. Shouldnt be hard to fix – come on! :)

  89. Skip Hunt says:

Very cool app! Just bought it and can’t wait for new scenes.

A couple of questions… is there an easier way of getting the recordings you make out of the app instead of having to record them with another device via the headphone jack?

Also… is there a way that your app can use the external mic instead of only the mic on the crappy headphones the iphone 3g came with? Or, a way to hook up a much better external mic and get RJDJ to use that instead of the one on the stock headphones?

    Thanks!

fantastic. it can make audio snapshots, atmospheres of a particular place and time. i listen to things days afterwards, it takes me right back to where i was.
is it possible to get the recordings out and resample them ? that would be wonderful.
    keep it up, great idea.

  91. Paul Hazel says:

Great idea guys, very well implemented. It needs development, but the potential is awesome. I’m well impressed.

  92. caipirina says:

Love it .. some remarks / request / annotations

    - there has to be a way to transfer the recorded files back to the computer !!! (other than some analog cable and some ripping software)

    - more scenes!!! the youtube vid left us all drooling

    - app crashing? then you likely have too many apps .. clean up a bit, re-install rjdj .. did the trick for me ..

    - volume low with non mic headset … maybe not all the way plugged in?

I love the general idea … please .. more scenes and some way to use the recorded stuff in e.g. imovie …

(or how about a desktop filter for imovie? Run your kid vids through eargasm? )

  93. Liam Sluyter says:

Oh wow, what fun this is…

The morning commute on the train became a fantastical voyage through an ambient soundscape. I became acutely aware of every sound, the rustle of morning newspaper, snippets of conversation, the clatter of the railway tracks… I stepped off the train grinning like a loon.

It’s not for everyone (nothing worthwhile ever is) but for those that get it, this is a massive treat. More please….

  94. darbotz says:

a veryyy veryyy nicceee application !!! i will get highhh tonite ! hahaha
when are the other album released? i want scrambler !

  95. Rocco says:

    …also neeeeed more (true addiction!)
Please come up with more scenes as soon as possible.
The VERY best so far: Worldquantizer, followed by Echolon and Eargasm.

  96. Leslie says:

As I have mentioned before, I love RjDj, but I feel there are many areas It can improve on…
    1. At the moment there is no way to interact with RjDj through “touch”
    2. There is no way of setting the tempo…
    3. There is no way to gain a control over RjDj – It does what It wants…
    4. How about developing the scene similar to KORG Kaos
    5. Lack of controls over anything at all… :(
Last but not least, RjDj has a potential to become a major music app for Iphone, but as it is the novelty of it and its presets will quickly wear down… :(

  97. Ludovic CANDELLIER says:

My first app bought on iphone, but it’s so amazing that i can’t get through.
Thanks to the developper, it’s a pure revolution like a mind-machine.
I wait after the update !!!

  98. Shawn says:

I’d like a way to scroll through recordings and some more control!

    THanks! Great App!

  99. Michael Krause says:

    An absolutly amazing App !!!
If your App is crashing try following
Steps. So in fixed the Problem without
    I-Tunes !!!!
    1.delete app
    2. Reset I-Phone (Hold Home+On/Off Button 10 Sek.), than Start Phone
    3. Turn off I-phone again (normal way
    ) and Turn on again.
    4. Load App again
    5. Turn I-Phone On/Off again
    6. Start rjdj and enjoy

    Good luck !!!

  100. Rob says:

Really wish you would put a note about needing a pair of mic’ed headphones on the iTunes description page. That would be very honest and probably save a lot of people a lot of time.

  101. Andy says:

Love this app. I’m really enjoying listening to the office and train in completely new ways.

I really want to be able to export the tracks and create my own scenes.

  102. Jay says:

Great app guys, really lovin’ it’s mind bending properties.
Is it just me that can get it to work with my iPhone’s internal mic?
Got a pair of sennheisers plugged in and it’s still working ok.

  103. tant says:

WOW this is great…. one of the best apps released so far..
Top fun and the possibilities seem endless….just downloaded pd to have a go at making my own scenes…

also it seems to work fine with just a set of headphones plugged in and using the internal mic….

    cheers….

  104. Ryan says:

Just bought this app last night for my 1st Gen iPhone and it crashes every time I start it. I also tried the various “workarounds” listed above to try and get it to work with no success. What’s the next step? Do I have to wait for an update fix?

  105. Ryan says:

    update to my last post…

I did a full restore of my iPhone (an hour-long process) and the app works now. I must admit- what your application does is amazing- even in this early stage… but I’m still pissed that I had to do a full restore in order to get it to work.

  106. Mike says:

This application does nothing. Even after a delete and re-install it does the same thing…. nothing. I want my $2.99 back.

  107. Ryan says:

There needs to be an option to export the recordings made with the app.

Also, based on the video, I thought that there would be more scenes that came with the app.

I love it, and am looking forward to the updates and additional scenes that will be added in the future.

    Thanks.

    Ryan.

  108. Simone says:

I love this app, it’s great, on my iPhone 3G but what i miss is the possibility to save my recordings and use them as ringtones etc.! I’d alos like to hear to the recordings without headphones but then I can hardly hear the sound! I don’t want to plug my earphones into someone elses ears but I’d like to share the fun with others. Thanks for an update on above wishes, soon!
    Simone

  109. Jeff Edsell says:

This is a great app, and a lot of fun. But I would like to be able to use different headphones (at least to listen to my recordings), and to get my recordings off the phone to add to iTunes or put into GarageBand for further tweaking and mixing. More themes would be nice too, but I’m sure they’re on the way. Thanks for this app!

  110. Andy says:

Alice can keep her looking glass–RjDj is so much better! :) I downloaded it on a break at work, and started messing with it right in the cubicle farm, but my office isn’t exactly the richest sonic environment (though it was pretty amusing to hear key-clicks and echoing voices bouncing around in the WorldQuantizer scene). The real fun started during my trip home. Traffic noise became an ambient drone, and the mundane noise inside the bus took on very musical qualities in Eargasm (even the beeping farebox sounded far less obnoxious!) I walked through the aisles of the local grocery store, with Echolon turning the entire experience into madly looping hilarity (I nearly laughed out loud when it caught a bit of baby-babble and turned it into a crowd of chattering elves). I then sat in my kitchen whacking various objects with a spoon, stamping my feet, and letting the WorldQuantizer turn the resulting bangs and pings into quite a nice groove. The talking pedestrian crossing sign in my area sounds like an alien robot (or something) through Echolon too. I can’t wait to blow the minds of my friends this weekend! I also definitely plan to learn to code some scenes too (I already am familiar with Csound, so Pd shouldn’t be hard to learn, I hope).

I think it would be great if there were a “gallery” sort of thing to upload RjDj recordings into. I also think it would be interesting if location (using GPS or wi-fi) could be a scene parameter, so that travel speed or position could influence the sonic textures.

hi, i m a french beatboxer, friend of Ezra u ve met, and i ve to tell u that this application is very good for music inspiration, it’s been 2 days i have rjdj and it’s amazing with the beatbox all the music it gives!!! the video with phillip from bauchklang is good, i think i ll make a short video of beatboxing in the rjdj. and i think i ll be reactive to ideas on this appli.

When will iPod Touch 2nd Gen be supported? I purchased it while your website said it was supported and then the wording was changed to it will “soon be” supported…. will the update be free since I paid for it and it is currently useless to me? It will not even load into my iPod touch.

    What gives?

    Any advise?

  117. Bizzy B says:

    Hey guys.
What a great und fun app this is!!! Luckily it is running on my iPhone without probs. Though, there are still some enhancements I would suggest to make (some are already mentioned on this board)…like
    - converting recordings into MP3 files
    - possibility to e-mail them
    - switch between different scenes during recording
    and so on…
I don’t know if the following was already suggested, but IT WOULD BE AWESOME, IF THE RECORDINGS COULD BE SET UP AS RINGTONE ON THE IPHONE (for example, the app “iDrum” allows this). That would give my iPhone a real personal and unique touch
Anyway, congrats and keep up the good work. I’am already looking forward to using the upcoming scenes.
    Cheerz

  118. Bizzy B says:

Okay, just discovered Simones comment posted on Nov 19th where the same ideas are published. Thus, I figure it’s nothing new to you guys…

  119. Andreas says:

Hi, I updated my iPhone 2G to 2.2. iTunes was trying to backup my data to the new firmware and now all is working fine aside from RJDJ. iTunes can´t install it on the new Firmware… Any Problems know because of this ??

    Kind Regards Andreas

  120. Frederic says:

I downloaded the version from iTunes. After installation, i started the program. RjDj closes automaticly after 4 seconds. I tried again, but no interface and no reaction.
    What to do now?

  121. Jeff says:

I downloaded the single app to try it out and it worked and everything was awesome so i bought the full album and just like everyone else, it crashes after a few seconds of starting up.

Perhaps it is Firmware 2.2? Or a bug in your app but for $2.99 this should be fixed asap.

Otherwise I would like a refund.

The issue is known, so please fix it.

    Thanks,
    Jeff

  122. Jeff says:

Oh and another note to my previous comment is that I tried to reinstall the single version to at least have a working rjdj app but the installation of the full album app broke the ability of the single app to work on my iphone 3G.

Somethings up with the album one…

  123. ansizak says:

    Doesn’t work… please, i don’t like seeing my money stolen… fix it

  124. feschar says:

    Nice App!!!
But please, please flag the programm also for the ipod touch, so that the others (including me) can use ist too! ;)
Or (if it doesn’t work with ist) make another version for the touch (with microphone headset, of course)…

Thanks! It would be fantastic! ;)

  125. The Doctor says:

    It doesn’t work, I tried everything…
Hard reset, uninstall, install via iTunes, …
I’m not going to restore my iPhone, I just upgraded to 2.2 and installed lot of apps! If this is the only way to make it work I’ll wait until there is a new firmware version for the iPhone…
I must say I’m not very happy with this way…

  126. iPod touch 1g user says:

I have an iPod touch 1g and I want rjdj really bad. can u make an rjdj based on accelerometer only or make headphones with a mic for touch 1g? Please this is the coolest app in the store.

  127. 2sugars says:

Amazing app – definitely one to have! More scenes pls! More more more……. Am running 2.2 jailbroken Iphone 3G 16 gig and no probs for me with install unlike the bananas up there ^^ – Unlucky for some i guess!

    2sugars!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  128. Brotesquire says:

This is a terrific application- It is amazing me as I type this and it transforms the keyboard clicks into the most unique sounds! The only thing I would add is for a way to sync your recordings onto your computer- that would be awesome!

  129. T-Will says:

Please add third-party headphone support, the included iPhone earbuds SUCK. The iPhone has a built-in mic, so why not use it?

    Thanks!

  130. sean says:

I enjoyed the free (Single) version, so I decided to buy the paid (Album) version.

I bet it’s great, too bad it won’t run when I install it. I have tried uninstalling it, restarting my iPhone, reinstalling it, restarting my iPhone, uninstalling/reinstalling and NOTHING works.

I do not recommend this application to anyone until the makers provide an update. On the App Store itself, at least one other person have had this issue.

  131. Marc says:

Very cool application ! Downloaded it and paid it. Fine :)

    But :
Earphones shipped with iPhone are crap. So i’d like to use third party ones with the internal iPhone mic. But seems i got fucked up !

And scenes are not loud enough when you do something noisy. Tried it in Paris subway systems. Sometime really cool (especially those bip sounds with the navigo systems or the peumatic gates pssshhhh ! at Les Halles station are great food for RjDj) but many times not loud enough because everything is so noidy and Apple’s crappy earbuds don’t isolate well from outside sound :(

Make an upgrade and’il be happy with it !

  132. Andy Line says:

Hey, I haven’t had the chance to use this application yet but im planning on buying a Ipod so i can run this program…. I am looking at getting an Ipod Touch 8GB……….. Does your software support the the 8GB touch……

  133. Leslie says:

Sorry… but it is CRAP…. Latest version did NOT address any issues at all.

  134. Elizabeth says:

This is far and away THE BEST iPhone application around – I am amazed that such an amazing auditory experience is so accessible! I have long been interested in the ways in which everyday sounds can be sampled into music, and this program makes it so easy… and fascinating! Wonderful work, people. Can’t wait to see what’s next!

  135. Peter Cooper says:

I have the same issue as others. No mic input working at all (works fine in other apps, such as SonicVox) and only Noia and Gridwalker make a single sound of any of the scenes :-( iPhone 3G, 2.2 firmware, latest version of RjDj Album.

  136. Garrett Hancock says:

    hi
    kfc327xcotjos1ft
    good luck

  137. Edward says:

Bought the “Album” version and, as others have evidently reported, only Noia and Gridwalker do anything, and even those two don’t seem to respond to any input from the mic. Running 2.2 on a first gen iPhone.

Interesting … Would like to test psychoacoustics & scene changes for entertainment.

    Cheers

  140. Gerhard says:

This app is really great. A completely new experience. It grab scenes from your “everyday live” and transform it into a kind of stylised piece of art to hang on your acoustic wall. Very inspiring. Can´t wait for more scenes.

I tried it with apples new in-ear phones and it works quite well cause they block out a lot of the surrounding noise. If you have problems with those noise maybe you should try in-ears.

  141. OoGuN says:

Absolutely wicked. tried the single and almost instantly downloaded the album.

And yes, it is possible to get recordings off your phone, but you need a Jailbroken one…
