iPod Touch 2G

Tuesday, October 28th, 2008

Wow, thank you all for the feedback. We have some good news for you:

RjDj will soon run on iPod Touch 2G!

There is one thing however: you will need to get a headphone with a microphone included, just like on iPhone Edge 2G.

We are preparing an update for this, and working hard on ironing some issues. We are also preparing the next steps and features, and look forward hearing more comments from you. Again, thank you all for the amazing feedback we received so far!

The first day in the life of RjDj

Sunday, October 12th, 2008

RjDj was born as an iphone application on a friday, october 10, 2008 about 2pm gmt. The first day was naturally quite exciting. Before going into details, let us give you some links so you know who RjDj is.

First of all we were really happy about the many reactions we got. Peter Kirn’s excellent article and his interview on the creative digital media blog deserves some special mentioning. Peter really managed to point out that RjDj is not born to be yet another iphone app. What we really want to achieve is to be the driving force behind a new music genre.

We also got a lot of requests for new features. The main topics were recordings download and scenes download. Both topics are on our radar. If you are one of those people who do not want to wait until new features are done but rather do them yourselfes, you came to the right place. Please let us know and drop us a line at info at rjdj.me. E.g. we need django people who are able to help us on the web framework. I guess later this week we will also release more info about the open source angle of RjDj.

A lot of requests were about more RjDj scenes. There is a whole bunch of really talented musicians/programmers working on that already and we hope we can attract more. This morning Mike Dixon who learned about RjDj on friday just uploaded a new scene…. that is the right spirit!! If you are interested in creating more scenes, read on.

Some people were trying to install RjDj on their Ipod touch, which does not work because we currently only support the iPhone (we are working on an iPod touch 2g version too….) Others tried to use RjDj without headset microphone. In theory that should work but only in theory. Ask Paul who spent countless nights on the audio driver how much he cursed over the Apple SDK…

A few people also reported one nasty problem that really twisted the mind of Paul and Guenter: RjDj crashed right after launch. We are working on this but are still trying to find a way to reproduce this error. If it happens to you, read the bug report and send us an email.

All in all it was a wonderful first day. Thanks again to everyone who is involved with RjDj. Whatever scene you are listening to, take care and enjoy your mind twisting hearing sensations.

PS: don’t forget to leave your review, on this site or directly in the store.

Beatboxing with RjDj

Monday, October 6th, 2008

I knew this video would rock when i filmed Philipp and Amaury beatboxing the sh#$%t out of Roman Haefeli’s RjDj scene WorldQuantizer. But what i got when i copied the sound recording from the Iphone and combined it with the video, totally blew me away. Unedited, live recorded, full length, RjDj beatboxing madness featuring Philipp Sageder from a band called Bauchklang and Amaury from RjDj:

The RjDj single release; The RjDj album release

Sunday, October 5th, 2008

It looks like there are more and more people out there who are desperately waiting for the RjDj release. I am sorry we kept you all waiting and out of the loop for quite a while but the closer we get to the release the more hectic things get here in the RjDj land. So here is the overdue update:

It took us until this week to get everything through to the app store. We had to adjust our binary once and resubmitted after the Vienna sprint. The good news is that Apple accepted the RjDj application this week.

So everyone is a happy chap here but you still need to hold your horses for a bit longer. Why is that?

In the last couple of weeks i met a lot of people and i had a lot of discussions with artists, developers, thinkers and makers. All in all, i re-evaluated our position and decided to react in the following way:

1. We are releasing two RjDj applications. “RjDj single” and “RjDj album”
2. RjDj single is a full RjDj player bundled with one scene for free.
3. RjDj album is a full RjDj player, bundled with 6 scenes for $2,99
4. We updated the app already and hope we will get through apple’s review process fast.

Here are the details:
On the Vienna sprint i had a lot of discussions with artists doing RjDj scenes. We all have one thing in common which is the understanding that we are pushing the reactive music genre by featuring artists and their content on RjDj. Currently every artist gets credits for his scenes and we are trying to promote artists wherever we can. On the sprint in Vienna it became pretty clear that some artists want to explore the possibilities of charging for the scenes they produce. Of course we fully support this because we think that RjDj scenes are as cool as any music title you can get via itunes for 0,99$ per song.

Later that week i met with Stefan Glaenzer, Christian Lutz and Peter Read. When i explained to them that most of the RjDj artists can only work on scenes during the sprints because that is the only time they have access to Iphones (yes, most people still don’t have Iphones ;-), it became obvious that we have to provide a method for artists to get more than credits out of producing mind blowing hearing sensations on RjDj.

Our solution for this problem is to provide one RjDj scene as a free promotion single for the first RjDj album. The album features 5 scenes + the free promotion scene. The album and the single are both full featured RjDj applications. The only difference is that we bundled the single release with one scene and the album with 6 scenes.

We are currently looking into the artist share. The idea is to keep it as close to what is happening in the music sector as possible. Obviously, by downloading the RjDj album release you will support the artists, apple, and us. I can ensure you that the artists and us are absolutely in need of your support and i hope apple will invest the money and give us more cool stuff like the Iphone and Itouch.

The RjDj player stays free and we start providing free and fee scenes at the same time. We are very, very curious how this all works out.

We will also have some announcements for the people who want to join us developing RjDj on an open source basis soon.

In any case, i hope the next weeks will be less hectic ;-)
