The RjDj single release; The RjDj album release

It looks like there are more and more people out there who are desperately waiting for the RjDj release. I am sorry we kept you all waiting and out of the loop for quite a while but the closer we get to the release the more hectic things get here in the RjDj land. So here is the overdue update:

It took us until this week to get everything through to the app store. We had to adjust our binary once and resubmitted after the Vienna sprint. The good news is that Apple accepted the RjDj application this week.

So everyone is a happy chap here but you still need to hold your horses for a bit longer. Why is that?

In the last couple of weeks i met a lot of people and i had a lot of discussions with artists, developers, thinkers and makers. All in all, i re-evaluated our position and decided to react in the following way:

1. We are releasing two RjDj applications. “RjDj single” and “RjDj album”
2. RjDj single is a full RjDj player bundled with one scene for free.
3. RjDj album is a full RjDj player, bundled with 6 scenes for $2,99
4. We updated the app already and hope we will get through apple’s review process fast.

Here are the details:
On the Vienna sprint i had a lot of discussions with artists doing RjDj scenes. We all have one thing in common which is the understanding that we are pushing the reactive music genre by featuring artists and their content on RjDj. Currently every artist gets credits for his scenes and we are trying to promote artists wherever we can. On the sprint in Vienna it became pretty clear that some artists want to explore the possibilities of charging for the scenes they produce. Of course we fully support this because we think that RjDj scenes are as cool as any music title you can get via itunes for 0,99$ per song.

Later that week i met with Stefan Glaenzer, Christian Lutz and Peter Read. When i explained to them that most of the RjDj artists can only work on scenes during the sprints because that is the only time they have access to Iphones (yes, most people still don’t have Iphones ;-), it became obvious that we have to provide a method for artists to get more than credits out of producing mind blowing hearing sensations on RjDj.

Our solution for this problem is to provide one RjDj scene as a free promotion single for the first RjDj album. The album features 5 scenes + the free promotion scene. The album and the single are both full featured RjDj applications. The only difference is that we bundled the single release with one scene and the album with 6 scenes.

We are currently looking into the artist share. The idea is to keep it as close to what is happening in the music sector as possible. Obviously, by downloading the RjDj album release you will support the artists, apple, and us. I can ensure you that the artists and us are absolutely in need of your support and i hope apple will invest the money and give us more cool stuff like the Iphone and Itouch.

The RjDj player stays free and we start providing free and fee scenes at the same time. We are very, very curious how this all works out.

We will also have some announcements for the people who want to join us developing RjDj on an open source basis soon.

In any case, i hope the next weeks will be less hectic ;-)

congratulation! Hope everything will work fine. I’m waiting for so long now and i was very happy to read about the launch and directly checked the app store but as i thought rjdj only available at the us store right? I couldn’t found anything in the german app store :( I really hope to get rjdj as soon as possible! :S

  2. Tim says:

Congratulations guys. Good to hear your gonna release 2 versions as you guys deserve something for your efforts. I’ll definately be getting the 5 scene version. Looking forward to the release and also to hearing the annoucement for developing scenes for RJDJ as I have a few ideas I would like to try out.

  3. Chris says:

    Congrats!!

I think the idea to release 2 versions is a great one.

On a side note has anyone else noticed that if you search within the app store (on iPhone and iTunes) that it autosuggests “rjdj single”, it returns no results but it must be close!

  4. fre says:

Yup, i also did get the result “rjdj single”, but without results. Can’t wait!

  5. Gary Katz says:

If someone could let everyone know when the app goes live that would be great.

Looking forward to trying it out.

  6. Dave Senior says:

Looking great. Can’t wait to find out more details about how to get involved.
Canada is anxiously waiting to play with an amazing new audible toy.

  7. Chris Powter says:

    awww, man! another “view weeks”???
I start to wonder if this app will be released THIS year…

  8. Didier says:

Will this app be available in the iTS of the Netherlands??

  9. Lee Byron says:

Only $3? You guys are seriously undercharging! For the price of a latte I could get my own life soundtrack / digital drugs? I would willingly pay $10 for this. Support the artists! :)

I can’t wait for this to be made public.

  10. Ben says:

The app for free? This is mighty generous. I would charge .99 for the app with one scene, and 4.99 for the app with 6 scenes. Like Lee says, a lot of people would happily pay 10 for this, myself included, but the lower price point would shoot the app to the top of the best sellers list and keep it there.

What I’m curious to know is will the Apple developer license let you sell the scenes outside of the iTunes store? Or will they be in updates, a separate app for each scene, etc?

No matter what the final outcome is, I can’t wait for this app to show it’s happy face on iTunes. I can see this project really taking off, a whole new sub genre, if you will. Also, this is an app that will sell well in ANY part of the world. I freely admit that I’m extremely jealous of this wonderful concept.

  11. Chris says:

To keep you all busy whilst waiting for RjDj to be released (COME ON APPLE) i suggest having a look at Brian Eno’s Bloom that just hit the app store.

    Have fun!

  12. Ben says:

Ha, I just gave a review of Bloom where I said “this should hold me over till RJDJ.”

  13. Chris says:

Well, the auto suggest now returns “rjdj single” and “rjdj album” but still no results, what are Apple doing? Does the auto suggest always bring up unreleased apps?

  14. gzehn says:

The Apps are online in the german store!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    I am so happy!

    Thanks for all….

  15. Chris says:

    Out in the UK too….

    Money spent… Big grin!!

    Congrats gents!!

  16. Dan says:

    Got it in the US!!!
the only problem i seem to be having is that the volume is very low, even with the volume turned all the way up on my phone, its almost hard to hear

  17. kc! says:

I just purchased the album and love it. I am REALLY hoping that I can download more scenes to this one. I am also hoping that I will be able to get all the scenes in ONE RjDj app so I don’t have a bunch of applications cluttering up my iPhone too!! (I am so jealous of the videos where there are many many more scenes available! PLEASE make them available to us soon!!!)

Nevertheless, I Love RjDj… and everyone I show it to loves it as well. Best app on the iPhone.

  18. Mel Marcelo says:

Please release other scenes ASAP! I LOVE the Scrambler Scene in your video. I can see myself using your APP for years. Please, again, get the Scenes out! I can’t wait to show your program to several kids that love music creation.

  19. Phil says:

So, when you record, where does it save the file? I want to rip the recording off of the iphone and put it on my hard drive? Is that possible?

I use Senuti to grab songs off of the iPhone. so is there support for this?

  20. Aaron says:

This app is the trippiest thing since LSD. It is really astonishing and cool. I purchased the entire album. Was a bit disappointed that all the scenes on the site weren’t included. I highly encourage you to find ways to keep the upcoming scenes free. Perhaps you can place an ad on the scene screen as a way to get revenue for the artists.. or artists can use it to promote their own music.
