The first day in the life of RjDj
RjDj was born as an iphone application on a friday, october 10, 2008 about 2pm gmt. The first day was naturally quite exciting. Before going into details, let us give you some links so you know who RjDj is.
- Meet RjDj, go ahead and download via Itunes
- Read more about RjDj
- See some pictures of little RjDj
- Watch more videos of RjDj scenes
First of all we were really happy about the many reactions we got. Peter Kirn’s excellent article and his interview on the creative digital media blog deserves some special mentioning. Peter really managed to point out that RjDj is not born to be yet another iphone app. What we really want to achieve is to be the driving force behind a new music genre.
We also got a lot of requests for new features. The main topics were recordings download and scenes download. Both topics are on our radar. If you are one of those people who do not want to wait until new features are done but rather do them yourselfes, you came to the right place. Please let us know and drop us a line at info at rjdj.me. E.g. we need django people who are able to help us on the web framework. I guess later this week we will also release more info about the open source angle of RjDj.
A lot of requests were about more RjDj scenes. There is a whole bunch of really talented musicians/programmers working on that already and we hope we can attract more. This morning Mike Dixon who learned about RjDj on friday just uploaded a new scene…. that is the right spirit!! If you are interested in creating more scenes, read on.
Some people were trying to install RjDj on their Ipod touch, which does not work because we currently only support the iPhone (we are working on an iPod touch 2g version too….) Others tried to use RjDj without headset microphone. In theory that should work but only in theory. Ask Paul who spent countless nights on the audio driver how much he cursed over the Apple SDK…
A few people also reported one nasty problem that really twisted the mind of Paul and Guenter: RjDj crashed right after launch. We are working on this but are still trying to find a way to reproduce this error. If it happens to you, read the bug report and send us an email.
All in all it was a wonderful first day. Thanks again to everyone who is involved with RjDj. Whatever scene you are listening to, take care and enjoy your mind twisting hearing sensations.
PS: don’t forget to leave your review, on this site or directly in the store.
If you want to link to our website, you could just copy paste the following little piece of code:

Hi Marian,

Thanks, piem

Hi!
I resently bought RjDj and I like it, but I miss many of the scenes you have shown here (e.g. Ping Pong).
WHERE ARE THE MISSING SCENES?

Like Schiko said.. I see like 30 scenes which jailbreakers can download.. But what’s up with the paid version? Will it be like updates or something??
October 13th, 2008 at 1:46 am
Hi, this is a wonderful concept, I was very excited to hear about it.
I own a 2G iPod Touch, so haven’t tried it yet… Very glad to hear Touch support is planned.
Question: will it eventually be possible to send Pd patches directly to run on a non-jailbroken iPod/iPhone?
October 13th, 2008 at 5:28 am
I wish this app could be used while using another app on the iPhone. I’d love to be hearing this while I play Scrabble or something.
October 13th, 2008 at 8:48 am
@Lennart: Perhaps I’m a little bit blind, but where did you found this “about 30 scenes” and to which folder on my iPhone do I have to put them?
October 13th, 2008 at 5:58 pm
On the demonstration video there is much more scenes than in the paid version which has just 6 scenes. What with other scenes, may I load them somehow?
October 13th, 2008 at 10:37 pm
If you have read older post from this site they said they would only put 6 scenes in the version they were going to release, and the other scenes will come later in an update or so. Just be patient, they will come if they wanted to release this app with all scenes this app wouldn’t have been released yet.
For the makers of RjDj:
- I’d like to maybe see an option where you can play your recordings using the build in speaker.
- As everybody else of course more scenes (but I know you’re working on releasing them)
- Better explanation of scenes because I still don’t know how to use some scenes
- A loading screen/splash screen because when you start it you see for 3 seconds only the two black bars and it is more nice to see a picture those 3 seconds.
- Running the application on the background, like you use RjDj in stead of the ipod application, but I don’t think apple will allow to let RjDj run as a background application but it would be nice if it was possible.

I bought the full version after watching the demo video. Where are all the other scenes? Like the Amen one for instance? Feeling a bit ripped off here!

I love the concept of RJDJ and the demo videos rock … is there any way to use it on a 1.1.1 iphone ?

RJDJ was just featured on G4TV on Attack Of The Show! That’s awesome! Hopefully you’ll get more buyers because of it.

Hi All,
I love this app! I’ve been having fun with it all day!
It is possible to get the recordings off the phone, but only if you have it Jailbroken, and have SSH installed. If you have both these things, connect to your iPhone in the usual way, and navigate to the following directory…
/Private/Var/Mobile/Applications/5CCEF923-0692-441E-A669-8D5603754A06/Documents/recordings/
I’m assuming the “5CCEF923…” bit is the same for everyone, but it might not be. You’ll be able to tell if you’re in the correct directory, because it will have “RjDj_Album.app” in it.
Incidentally… I also found that disabling “auto lock” and playing music on shuffle helped when transferring the files. This is because, for some reason, when the phone went into auto lock mode, SSH transfers stopped! This might just be something on my own phone, and your experience may differ!
Good luck,
n_sonic
ps. I take no responsibility for anyone making a mess of their iPhone whilst doing this… :)

Very cool app. I played with the Single version for only a few minutes before buying the Album.
I’ve put together a slapdash podcast of my experiments if you’re interested:

I’d love feedback on what you folks think. I hope to put more up soon. I had made quite a few recordings while playing the clarinet, but RJDJ only recorded silence for the entire session.
