The RjDj Shake is here
Here it is, the long awaited RjDj shake release. We have bundled seven different scenes into the shake album. You will find Roman Haefeli’s Amenshake Scene, which is something like a classic of the shake scenes and was requested many times. It is a dance scene that gives you dnb when you move. Romans scene is fun and i hope we will see some more exiting content in this field. Amaury Hazan did a crazy scene that needs certain, sometimes wild, movements of the phone to get specific musical reactions. Whenever you see someone treating his Iphone/Itouch as if he wants to smash it or shake it to death…. he is probably listening to strike from Amaury (see video below). Christian Haudej did the opposite to strike. His scene is called MyFantasyGame.com and you move your device slowly to get some acoustic feedback. The music is very relaxing and so are the movements. Matt Robertson’s scenes are controlling different instruments and Paul Brossier’s scene scratcher is scratching in ways you can’t scratch with any turntable. Have fun, and let us know how you are doing with the RjDj shake. -PLEASE TAKE CARE, DON’T HURT ANYONE AND DON’T SMASH YOUR DEVICE-

Hi!
Why do you guys bring out NEW apps, instead of just updating the Album???
I’ve paid for the Album and now everytime there’s a new scene, you have to buy the new version?
Why don’t you just update?
-Peter
December 29th, 2008 at 12:42 pm
I bought the Rjdj album version five minutes after trying the single version because after seeing the videos I expected to see a lot more scene. With the next version and only one more scene, I started to worry that I spent my money a little too soon on the product. But today I’m very disappointed !
I was showing Rjdj around to everyone I know and let them play with it encouraging everyone to buy it and expect new scenes in the next version. Rest assured that I won’t be promoting your greed around anymore.
December 29th, 2008 at 1:04 pm
I agree with Peter and originaliko. That’s not a good Karma.
December 29th, 2008 at 2:27 pm
I feel the need to agree, somewhat. I was hoping that new scenes would be included in new updates to the original RJDJ application, and not as a separate application in itself. Not so much from the point of view of paying for it, more from a user’s convenience point of view. I’d rather not have to close down RJDJ to switch between scenes.
December 29th, 2008 at 2:36 pm
Seconding Liam’s point. Would be great if after paying and downloading new scenes it integrates into the existing app. Probably not possible via the App Store right now, but not the best solution, nevertheless.
But I totally disagree with you guys here, who seem to imply paying is some kind of rip-off. Come on, you would pay for new tracks, too, wouldn’t you?
December 29th, 2008 at 4:37 pm
What a fantastic idea… – Stop supporting RjDj Album and tell the users that have purchased RjDj to fuck-off and buy the new app… Brilliant!
December 29th, 2008 at 5:15 pm
Well… I have bought this app just for the sake of bashing It, but I have to admit that what was accomplished with RjDj Shake is absolutely brilliant – I’m eating my previous post notes as we speak…
For the price of (very cheap) humbugger, RjDj Shake is certainly worth the price (and there some)…. It now resides proudly next to my RjDj Album…
Excellent… :)
December 29th, 2008 at 7:52 pm
I’m still going to download this, but nowhere was it ever stated that the new scenes would be in another paid application. I was always under the assumption that it would be a free update. Ah well, I’m sure its worth the $3 but in the future, dont mislead the buying public like that.
December 29th, 2008 at 9:41 pm
Keep Supporting dont read this guys they are just stupid poor people xD
December 30th, 2008 at 12:40 am
@ro0t,
Indeed ^_^
December 30th, 2008 at 3:00 am
I don’t understand like its common sense that the app would be updated and add the new scenes onto the app without paying but then again i don’t mind paying for new scenes but then again its a real inconvenience of getting new apps, then again it almost seems like this is just a scam yea i know you guys done hard work for making these apps and scenes but its better free so you can have more people using your work
December 30th, 2008 at 6:43 am
@ro0t
Stupid poor people? For one, you really have no right to call anyone stupid with your awful, run on sentence structure and child like emoticon.
Secondly, I’ve spent well over $300 on apps, more than you’ve probably spent or in fact more than you could probably afford. So dont give me that bull.
Thle fact remains that when it was stated that there would be new scenes in a future update, it was fair to assume that that meant an update to the RjDj album. Nowhere was it mentioned that these new scenes would be a completely new app. Suffice to say, I paid for it and enjoy it immensely, however some may feel that this is a cash grab, plain and simple.
December 30th, 2008 at 8:57 am
So you Neef three icons in the Hone Screen for rjdj? Ridiculous!
Besides it is am Rio off
When Album was presented in youtube, everyone expected it to contain scenes like Amen
…
How stupid that only Single supports rjdj urls by the way?!
December 30th, 2008 at 10:16 am
Toll wäre, wenn es zusätzlich noch eine PREMIUM-Version gäbe…. (also shake und album zusammen)
ABER: Diese Version sollte immer kostenlose Updates erhalten, also alle einzelnen Neuerscheinungen per Update nachbringen!
Grundlage dafür sind natürlich neue RJDJ-Versionen. (Welche hoffentlich geplant sind… :-))
Aber diese Option wurde sicher schon bedacht, denke ich…
Schöne Grüße aus Oberösterreich…!
December 30th, 2008 at 10:32 am
@Pfanni: There is a simple technical reason, that only the Single supports rjdj://-URLs: Safari can only register one unique Application to a certain URL scheme like rjdj://. It’s not possible to have two or more applications active for the same URL-scheme at the same time. So we decided to give the download capability to the free version of RjDj,
The downloadable Jingle Bells christmas scene is an example of how we would like to distribute more scenes in the future, but the process still needs some polishing. Not all of them will be free like the xmas scene. We need to pay the rent, too.

I think that a lot of the hostility that a company can receive, such as you’re receiving now, comes as backlash when they’re not forthright with their users when plans change. When rjdj was originally shown, I think that most had the expectation that the scenes that were not in the album release at the time would be added later, either as free updates to the version on the app store, or as free and micropayment downloads on your site that would go into the app they had bought already. The single version should have just been a demo. That’s a pretty standard expectation at this point with the app store.
Instead, what you’re doing is very confusing, technical limitations aside. It now sounds like the album version of rjdj that I paid for is never going to have additional scenes, and if that’s the case, then I’m probably not going to be buying the rjdj shake app. Nobody here is faulting you for wanting to charge for these scenes. The issue is that you’re releasing them and asking for people to pay for them in packages where they aren’t sure what they’re actually getting. I would much rather pay a dollar per scene to add scenes from your site into rjdj album than have three apps that have different capabilities.
In the future, please consider what makes the most sense for your users, and if you don’t know, ask us. It’s very hard to see the plan you have laid out from our point of view, and it’s making us disappointed with your company. If you are clear and upfront instead of making us tease details out when something doesn’t work as expected, this should go much smoother.
December 30th, 2008 at 6:28 pm
i have to admit that i was a little bummed out to see another separate paid RJDJ app out here.
after thinking about it a little more, if you kept the live microphone type scenes and the motion related ones separate that would make sense…
but if there will be more paid releases rather than individual updates then i’d be a little less understanding.

Brilliant. Thanks for the nearly perfect comment.
I was quite pissed ans my german iPhone Keyboard dis the Rest :-)
December 30th, 2008 at 11:35 pm
I totally understand the separation.
These are two completely different worlds.
Also for iPod Touch Users the Album makes no sense at all.
So keeping it seperated is also good for how to handle the app.
Since a few minutes I’m into Shake and again IT’S A BLAST words
can’t hardly describe… the scenes are phenomenal and the famous
Amen Shake looses totally against such epic scenes like Strike or
Meno.
But now it is necessary to keep updates in one of these 2 categories.
Or do you come up with a third idea?! ;)
Now I want updates for Album and for Shake….
Best wishes,
Rocco
December 31st, 2008 at 2:04 am
I want my money back. I can’t believe Apple let you guys get away with this!!! I bought your Album product with the assumption that it would be updated and new albums added with updates. Instead, you release them as separate purchases?!! And NO freakin’ updates to your Album app?
I want my money back. You were completely misleading with the Album app. I’m sending a complaint to Apple and will never buy your apps again.
Shame on you.
December 31st, 2008 at 6:29 am
@brandon
You made a very good explanation from the users that are upset. I’m hoping rjdj will come to realization and think of something new and convenient for their users but if not then they pretty much are gonna get less users wanting to use your products, other question, whats up with the website “music.rjdj.me” ? they show the scenes you sell through “shake” and “album” but to the right of them scenes its says “this scene is for free”? whats up with that, again i feel as if this is just another typical euro scam!
December 31st, 2008 at 9:26 am
hello everyone
thanks for all your comments, even the nasty ones ;-)
two things i want to add here, maybe it helps:
There will be updates for the different releases but please consider the following: RjDj scenes are music as well as software. With software you are used to get updates etc. but did you ever get an update of the metallica album which you bought?
And the second point: we are actually not selling the RjDj app. We are selling RjDj scenes on behalf of the artists who created those scenes. Currently apple is not supporting “item based” transactions within an application. E.g. you would not be able to buy a scene or an album through the RjDj player (which certainly is the model we would prefer)… we are experimenting with workarounds, but right now this means, that we have no other chance than releasing new apps for new RjDj releases. I hope, we will have better possibilities soon.
December 31st, 2008 at 6:05 pm
There are several problems here:
1. Most application developers are giving free updates and people have come to expect it. The original information on the website was at best misleading since you indicated many scenes and put only a few into the album. I certainly expected some additional scenes to come to that app without paying. Perhaps that’s my mistake, but I suspect many people felt the same and you should not be surprised at the response.
2. In my opinion the original album had only one scene with any staying power (World Quantizer). It’s the only one I have used more than a few times and the only one I ever recorded. The others were just novelties and lost my interest in minutes. I fully expect the same to be true on future releases. $3 is too much for one decent scene each time you decide to release a new album. It’s not enough to have a business model where the artists are paid for their work – you need to find one where the customers get value too, and consumers can decide which artists are worth compensating.
3. Your business model isn’t transparent at all. You say you are not selling the app, but this is obviously false – it costs $2.99 for either album. Apple makes it very clear exactly how much of that you get. As far as I know you have not made it clear at all how much the artists are getting. Do you expect people to feel better just because you say you are doing the right thing for the artists? It may well be true but you have not given people any reason to believe you, and your business practices are not helping build your credibility.
Anyway, I am not buying anything more from RJDJ until there are free updates to the original album AND there is a way of compensating those artists who are actually providing value, not the ones making throwaway scenes.
January 1st, 2009 at 1:00 am
hello
i am thinking the same things; i am very disapointed by rjdj, all is unclear and very easy; the new app is very ennoying, there is no add on rjdj album, and all is not good at all; no possibilities to really create, no possibility to make a mp3 of the recordings, and so;;;;;;
sometimes we have no response to your answers;
the idea is good but the result is bad, really; i buy all , but i would like to have my money back; as its no possible, i prefer to forget you

Can you at least fix the original album version to use the built-in microphone? The included headphones SUCK big time and I refuse to use them, therefore, I can’t use RJDJ because it doesn’t support the built-in mic.
January 3rd, 2009 at 2:49 am
Correct me if I’m wrong, but the reason the app doesn’t use the main iPhone mic would be that the phone is hardcoded to shut the main mic andspeaker off when the headphones are in. If you ran album without headphones, the main mic would create feedback with the speaker, and the hardcoding won’t allow main mic on, audio through headphones.
To weigh in on the whole update vs. new app thing, I think the problem comes down to the platform. People expect download titles to do two things: a) cost nearly nothing and b) deliver everything, including additional content at no extra cost. Clearly, for devs, this is not ideal. I believe the solution to be what rjdj have done – fresh app, low cost, new scenes. You can’t expect them to do this dev work on the new scenes for only £1.50 a user. That’s not a sustainable income, and without that money, there’s no incentive to develop.
January 3rd, 2009 at 4:16 am
Ah-ha!!! I found it. Go to your iTunes account… go to your purchase history… find your purchase of RJDJ Album… and click “Report a Problem”. You can then select “This Application does NOT function as Expected”.
Maybe if enough of us report them… Apple will prevent other developers from getting away with such deceptive practices.

what did you expect? buy a turntable and get free records for
the rest of your life?
but i agree that it is a bit problematic how new scenes are sold,
and will lead to an ipod/phone cluttered with rjdj-icons. (i hope
the new icon at least has a different colour…)
unfortunately i think it is not possible to do it much better with
the current app-store, since it is impossible to sell ‘addons’ for
existig applications. an ‘paid update’ (is this possible?) would be
good for the 2nd album, but not that good for people who want
to buy the 3. ,7. and 9. (for example) album.
external micropayment for downloads would be more complicated,
and probably not tolerated by apple(?).
maybe it would be a good idea to release free updates for both
albums as soon as possible, each containing 1 or 2 scenes of the
other kind (not necessarily from the other album), i think people
would be less ‘pissed off’.

January 3rd, 2009 at 3:51 pm
@martin: The turntable metaphor hits it exactly. ;)
Anyway the scene download feature is already in the free version of RjDj (the “Single”). Its update also includes an additional free Shake scene as a free bonus.
Scene download with the free app was chosen as a method to distribute the xmas gift scene here: http://rjdj.me/2008/12/24/christmas-scene/
More scene downloads are in the works – some free, some not.
@BallsInMyMouf: the RjDj “music” site is in alpha/beta state as written on every page there. Nothing there is cast in stone, everything might change and it will include errors during the development phase.
January 3rd, 2009 at 8:24 pm
Frank and Martin…
No, I DID NOT expect continued “free” albums. What I DID expect is that the scenes demo’d in the sample video that I watched before I bought “Album” would be in the App. When they were missing, I figured they just weren’t ready for primetime and would come in an update. When they didn’t, and were released later as a new product… it was VERY deceptive and misleading.
If RJDJ had at least done at least one free update that included the album scenes displayed in the promo-video.. I would have been completely content to have to pay for future developed apps. (excluding maintenance updates of course).
But that’s NOT what happened. The RJDJ Album was promoted with videos that showed some very cool scenes that were not included in the app. There was no mention of this at all until AFTER you found out for yourself after the fact.
If you can’t see how that was blatantly deceptive, dishonest, and completely reprehensible… then that’s just sad that buyers expect so little honesty from their vendors.

[...] RjDj » Blog Archive » The RjDj Shake is here [...]
January 4th, 2009 at 12:27 pm
after having watched the videos, i think amenshake is missing in
album1 and contained in album2 only. i do not know, if it was explicitly stated anywhere, that all scenes from the video will be included in
album1. if that is true, than it is indeed dishonest. if not, than it is
not less honest than, for example, any computer-ad showing
applications like photoshop, autocad, logic, etc. you usually have
to pay extra for these. not to mention almost
all other advertising. when buying bacardi you usually just get
the booze, not the beach, and not the pretty (and pretty drunk) girls.
i agree that rjdj-scenes should not be advertised like this. ;)
anyway, i still think that it would be a good idea to release a scene from
new albums as an update (as a teaser actually) for buyers of old albums.
in case of amenshake, anyone should be happy.

At the end of the day… it’s just a shame. I really enjoyed Album and was looking forward to updates and future purchases from this company.
But, at this point… I have very bad taste in my mouth and will likely not waste any more time thinking about it… or any more money on their apps. Too bad really. I hope the RJDJ developers stop and think for a minute.. that screwing over the people who supported them and bought their first app out of trust that the app would be improved, etc. is not a very wise business practice. And, that bad word of mouth eventually can be just as powerful as great word of mouth.
Take care all. I’m finished with bothering with this or this company.
January 6th, 2009 at 12:58 am
I’ve purchased both the album and shake. I’m assuming there will be additional scenes to both put together shortly – I can’t imagine how the developers wouldn’t see how much more successful they’re going to be by being decent to those of us who gave them our money based on the promise of additional scenes being available.
To the developers – handled properly (ie throw us a couple bones now and then) you could be on to something truly amazing here.
January 6th, 2009 at 11:02 pm
RJDJ is a very nice concept, but this is not cool. Promising updates that didn’t come, but instead working on another app, with the updates that you promised to customers that had already payed? Lame.
You know there’s nothing we can do now. We’ve already payed. But don’t expect people to buy products from you in the future…
January 8th, 2009 at 10:32 am
I must say that I disagree with the negativity going on here. I immediately bought the new “Album” when I knew it wat available and I am very happy with the content. When in the beginning the RjDj team stated that they were going to offer more content is exactly what they did, the only thing is they didn’t foresee the technical limitations that prevents them to sell content for download on a single app, hence the new amazingly cool app…
Nothing fishy about that!
RjDj team, keep up the good work!
Cheers,
Jeroen
January 8th, 2009 at 7:14 pm
I think the main proof that YOU YOURSELF planned differently is the different sort modes that rjdj offers. why would i want to sort a handfull of scenes by artists? ridiculous and greedy of you to offer severeal “albums”
January 8th, 2009 at 10:04 pm
The way I see it is that they never intended to add another app AND they never intended to offer free extra content (at least not solely). This combination together with the technical limitations however could only result in either new free content delivered as an app update or payed extra content delivered as an extra app. The latter makes more economical sense as the development involves input from independent artists.
Just to be clear, I am a client like yourself, I’m definitely not undercover RjDj staff like you suggested.
Cheers,
Jeroen
January 10th, 2009 at 10:56 am
i think it was planned to release free(’comunity’) content and
paid content. maybe it was not planned to bundle the paid content
with an extra app (technically the same as the free one,i think the
devellopers where just too lazy to throw out the unneeded sort-by
functions), but that is basicly due to limitations by apple.
anyway, there will be (actually are, for those who know) quite
a few free scenes. i am about to finish my 5th. i hope the
rjdj-download-section will be finished soon.

So have all RJDJ items been removed from ITunes now?
I just tried to buy Shake and it says it isn’t available.
January 12th, 2009 at 9:39 pm
Oh, and a few other things I wanted to mention.
To the guy who said Word Quantitzer is the only good scene on Album, I have to say that pretty much everyone I know who has RJDJ likes Eargasm the best. I almost never use anything else.
Also, I am not sure what everyone is saying about using the built in mic w/ their own headphones. It works just fine for me using some standard non-apple headphones.
January 13th, 2009 at 9:05 am
Sigh.
Well, not like this messy pudding needs another voice, but I would also like to express a level of disappointment. It is fairly obvious that the vast majority of people here were under the impression that the “albums” for RjDj were going to be more of an update thing, and not a whole new full app.
I don’t know if this was your intention from the start or just the way it had to happen, but it does feel slightly misleading and just like it could have been handled in a much better way.
I still don’t understand why the single version seems to be changing more than the alb um version either. I had deleted that right after I got the album version and wouldn’t have known there was a new album in it or the ability to dl some xmas album, unless I came here.
This app is the bomb and was the 1st thing I bought for my iPhone because I thought it was amazing. I have told everyone about that I know has an iPhone. I just think you guys need to sort out some stuff and be a bit more upfront and clear with people.
January 13th, 2009 at 10:00 pm
Seems like Album and Shake were removed from the App Store. They still show up if you search for them but when you click to go further, you get a notice saying they are not available. RjDj Single is still there.
Not sure if this is caused by customers submitting complaints, but I hope you guys are resolving this issue that caused many of your prior customers to be dissatisfied not with your product, but with how you’re handling things.
As someone touched on before, it’s your right to get paid just like any other person but when you’re selling a product, you have to word your descriptions carefully and make sure you sell what you have advertised.
Any changes that come up should be at least announced to the public, and not disregarded as if nothing happened, technical difficulties included. I can assure you that honesty is what will gain you fans and loyalty from good amount of customers.
I hope someone will come forward and address this as it should have been from the get go, and not go on the offensive saying ‘the artists need to be paid’. You have a wonderful product in your arsenal and it would be a shame to have it ruined by tainted reputation because of poor communication with your customers.
Good day!
January 14th, 2009 at 12:49 am
Yea, I noticed they were not available
In iTunes a few days ago.
Can someone let us know what’s up?
January 14th, 2009 at 10:06 pm
oh great, did the trolls whining about the shake release finally manage to kill it? i just wanted to purchase shake but the item is not available in the appstore anymore! wonderful, how can i get it now? and just because someone was complaining about 2,39 EUR??? thanks to the whiners…
January 20th, 2009 at 2:58 pm
Anyone who is complaining baout the fact that they didn’t see some of the demo songs on the end product probably doesn’t know that developers do not natively have access to the itunes playlist, so it was never going to happen.
Shame, but maybe one day, eh?
February 1st, 2009 at 8:02 pm
I bought RjDj Album believing there would be updates with more scenes to come, adding to the existing album of scenes. However, you guys turn around and make a NEW RjDj, asking to pay again. I think this isnt fair. I paid for the program, figuring scenes are going to be free and update and such so i can continue using the same program. Now, i have no doubt Shake is an “awesome program” but id much rather just get an update with free scenes. Seems like a cheap little scam to me.
February 5th, 2009 at 6:48 am
I watched a video over at YouTube when I first bought this (also with the belief that new scenes would be added to the application in future updates).
I even posted this comment:
“I bought this today…it’s great! Some of the scenes shown aren’t included. How do I get them? The scratch and Amen breaks…”
And was told
“There will be more updates soon for RjDj so don’t worry.”
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lr-khifcl-U
I believe I found this video via a link from the RjDj site and thought that this was an official response. I also feel that it was not made clear to me when I bought that I would be expected to pay for functionality that was advertised as coming soon.
I may report to apple about this, and request my money back, even though it is a great application. Companies and developers need to be more transparent, and I have come to expect more.
February 8th, 2009 at 11:56 am
I’ve read through all of the comments and still feel the Report a Problem message I sent to Apple is spot on. I’m embarrassed that I recommended RjDj Album to friends who purchased your app. It may have only been $3 but you guys just lost someone who would have bought new scenes and could have brought you many more customers. Here’s how I explained it to Apple:
I only bought this app to have access to the additional “scenes” the developer promised to deliver. The app was quite limited when it was released and has seen only a minor bug fix since its debut in the App Store. It has been several months and no new “scenes” are available. The developer has now released a new app containing “scenes” that they originally promised to customers that purchased the RjDj Album. On the RjDj website the developer has made it clear that they have no intention of delivering new “scenes” to RjDj Album.
Apple needs to protect its reputation and remove developers like Reality Jockey from the App Store. RjDj Album is nothing more than a demo of the functionality that Reality Jockey is now selling in the RjDj Shake. It is reasonable to conclude that Apple’s customers were duped into buying a product that Reality Jockey’s had no intention of continuing to develop.
Apple should refund or credit customers that purchased RjDj Album.
April 7th, 2009 at 5:06 pm
RjDj, as I understand it, is a set of musical scores. Would you expect to buy a book of sheet music at your local music store, then come back a week later and expect to get more works by the same composer/arranger for free? Come on you kids!
