SxSW

Friday, August 28th, 2009

Last year we were dreaming about an RjDj sprint at sxsw but in the end we were too late and it was too complicated to organize something. This year we are stretching out early enough. So if you have an idea about the best way to organize an RjDj sprint @sxsw let us know. In the meantime i have registered for a panel and the PanelPicker is still open for votes! So please go through that hilarious signup and vote for my panel.

More scenes from Stefan Smulovitz

Friday, August 28th, 2009

To me its like Stefan already came up with his own sub-genre in reactive music. The scenes he produces are building bridges between traditional musicianship and exploring new sounds with technology. Stefan is coming from a background as an improvising violist, and the improvising aspect to me is central in all his scenes. He is providing us with the musical contexts to improvise in. Good news is that we have three new scenes made by Stefan!

Pulse creates rhythmical structures on top off which you can create harmonies. Whistle or sing to hear some nice sine tone harmonies (tilt to change them). Shake to change the pulse or use two fingers to select a specific one.

Rain gives you the chance to improvise songs with the beautifulvoice of Viviane Houle, which you might already now from Stefans scene Time. You can tilt you device to change the density of the background. Then touch the screen to create songs. Shake to switch and create wordless melodies. You can also use a 2nd finger to play sounds.

Sound Globe lets you play around with whatever comes to the microphone and puts it into an auditory frame. Shake to change the background sound and move your finger around the pad to change the delay.

I guess we are gonna hear some amazing recordings done with these scenes.

myspace acquire iLike

Wednesday, August 19th, 2009

We just received the follwoing from iLike:

We wanted our artist community to be among the very first to hear officially that MySpace has entered into an agreement to acquire iLike.

That is heavy stuff, especially because iLike just started rolling out “Artist apps” through their artist dashboard. Now the question is how happy apple is that the whole myspace artist community will be in the position to produce apps with a click… maybe we will see the music section in the app store being swamped very soon if apple does not react, which brings an email from Jokton Strealy into my mind. He was writing:

I propose that we all get together to come up with some suggested sub-category names for the music category. I will start the list off and hopefully some of you will chime in and give suggestions for other categories or add more definition to a sub-category that is alredy here.

Also Fred Wilsons post trying to get Tumblr back into play points out how heavy the marriage of iLike and myspace really is:

MySpace has always been the social media destination for musicians and their fans. The rumored acquisition of iLike (new mgmt’s first purchase), suggests that music and entertainment will be even more of a focus for MySpace going forward as it looks to differentiate itself from Facebook and other social networks. avc.com, A VC, Aug 2009

Shop in progress, Kids on DSP app in production.

Wednesday, August 19th, 2009

Short update from the RjDj land.

  • Andie is busy integrating the RjDj in App store. We are currently submitting the scenes to apple for review and hope they will be approved very soon. See my last post about the details but it basically means that we have to say goodby to the free RjDj app and switch to a 0,99 app with the advantage that soon you will be able to buy single scenes through the apple channel
  • Speaking about scenes brings me directly to a new production which i think is very, very interesting. There are two scenes from the kids on DSP available already and here is a video about their TimeCrusing scene which they did together with techno legend Carl Craig. Very interesting…

Four new scenes to be explored

    Friday, August 14th, 2009

We have four new scenes online!  Yet another one from the Kids on DSP which is called DoppelgangerCreature Comforts from Mike Dixon, ShakeNRoll from ookoi, and Voceremin from J.Michael Brown.

Doppelganger is another preview scene to the forthcoming Kids on DSP album. Your Doppelganger is a cheeky animal, a musical beast. Talk to him, wait a bit and listen to the answer. Besides talking to you, this scene also listens to the loudness of your sonic environment. Doppelganger also likes passing motorcycles. Just what Rock n Roll used to be.

After Noble Choir Mike Dixon is back with Creature Comforts. There is a little traveler you can move around the forest with your finger. Press the screen to call out cries of comfort, and listen to the forest creatures’ replies. Blow on the microphone to invoke the trees voice. Other sounds into the microphone invoke the noble choirs of the forest. Water flows off in the distance, no matter what.

ookoi is a dutch duo whose work is foremost a play with time and space. Harold from ookoi attended the Music Hackday in London where he worked on this scenes. Shake your device to move from sound to sound … Roll to balance the sounds’ volume

Have you ever wanted to use a theremin to control a vocoder?  Then try Voceremin. It’s J. Michael Brown’s first scene. Do strange things to your voice by tilting and turning the device.

If you want to be a reactive music producer , check out our composer page. You can share your scenes with all the RjDj ’s out there just take a look here. We are also planning a couple of sprints around the world.
