Check out the video of Adam Parkinson playing at the New York Electronic Arts Festival, 2009 together with Atau Tanaka, Director of the Culture Lab at Newcastle University.

Atau plays the biomuse, which captures physiological neuron impulses resulting from muscle tension, using it to control samples and synthesis in Max MSP.  Adam is playing on two iPods running RjDj.

Pages are a way for the listener to easily trigger different states in a scene. A great example is the scene Love by AIR, and today we’re releasing it in the RjDj Store. The scene has 5 pages that present different parts of the reactive version of AIR’s Love track.

We are also supporting paging in our authoring tool, the RJC1000. This means, if you are a producer or musician you can now easily create paged RjDj scenes like the AIR scene.

We are also releasing two new scenes from Kids on DSP that take advantage of the new paging feature.

Core Dump by Kids on DSP

… a core dump consists of the recorded state of the working memory of a computer program at a specific time, generally when the program has terminated abnormally (crashed)…  Swipe through the pages of the scene to experience different modes.

Timecruising v2.0 by Kids on DSP

This scene is a collaboration with Carl Craig and features his track Landcruising. Swipe through the pages of the scene to experience different modes! On page one you can move through reality backwards in real-time. Experience reality as a beautiful chord in page two. Page three picks up percussive noises and puts them into beats. Sounds become melodies all around on page four.

You can find these scenes in the Store tab in RjDj. You need to be updated to the latest version of the RjDj app to play these scenes!

Making paged scenes

RJC1000 is our reactive music tool for making scenes, currently in private beta. You can use it to easily create scenes from your musical material, and pages come built in. Read more and apply to be part of the beta testing here.

The rough structure for the day is as follows:

• Overall presentation of RjDj and the concepts of reactive music
• Short introduction into Pure data
• How to create RjDj scenes and get them on iPhones/iPods
• Collecting and discussing ideas for scenes
• Working on individual scenes (most of the time)
• Presentation of scenes
• Closing party

The most played recording that was also part of the contest last week was this short piece. Please note that you need to claim your name in the application to be eligible for a price in the contest! Venus Hum

Put yourself into this dynamic remix version of “Mechanics & Mathematics”, the title track from Venus Hum’s latest recording. Hear a different version every time you listen. Speak, sing and make noise while Annette is singing to create harmonies. When Annette is not singing, your own sounds become the groove. Tilting forward and back changes the groove intensity. Venus Hum is consisting of vocalist Annette Strean, multi-instrumentalist Tony Miracle, and film-maker Kip Kubin,  Their new record, Mechanics & Mathematics, continues the mission to marry pop songs with strange electronic sound. We really wanted to see what you can do with the new scene Love by AIR, so we’ve decided to run a little contest for the best Love recording. Air duo, Nicolas Godin and Jean-Benoît Dunckel, worked with RJDJ to create five, real-time “soundscapes” that enable fans to listen to “Love” in a new way, as an exclusive app only version.

Now music fans can use the iPhone and iPod touch to experience their personal version of “Love” just by putting on their headsets and singing or speaking into the microphone or just listening to the world through Air’s soundscapes. Using the app, Air fans and romantics alike can record their love message and send Valentine’s Day dedications to their loved ones via email, Facebook and Twitter.

With the simple swipe of a finger, fans can access the five different reactive soundscapes that present “Love” in a different way.

• Chanter – puts your voice in the music, letting you sing, speak or add your own sounds into the mix
• Harmonie -  vocodes sounds in realtime and makes them harmonise with the music
• Papillon – samples tiny segments of sounds and creates audio butterflies from them, flying around inside the music
• Voler – creates a rising texture of sound by sampling reality and layering / filtering them with the music

We had quiet a lot of new scenes recently. Triptych from Chuck Wiggins lets you record three sound snippets and play them with different delay times. Inspired by composer John Oswald’s Plunderphonics pharmacopia produced a scene called Oswald that creates collages out of the sounds surrounding you. Dizzy Banjo came up with a new genre for his scene Ascend, generactive. It’s an ambient generative composition that is controlled by hard sounds from the environment. Unowis from Florian Waldner collects sounds and plays them back using granular synthesis along luscious string sounds. Fabio Iaci recently joined the RjDj composer family but already has three scenes out there: Nozy lets you control a noise landscape by moving the device, Theremint is a one finger organ theremin, Galactica is crazy spacey thing that teleports you onto a distant planet.

Venus Hum, an electro-pop trio from Nashville, is working on an RjDj scene with the help of experienced RjDj scene producer Chuck Wiggins. The scene will be based on the title track of their latest album Mechanics & Mathematics. Venus Hum’s mission is to marry pop songs with strange electronic sounds. We are going to be at Transmediale in Berlin next Thursday as part of a panel discussion about music apps. We hope to discuss the unprecidented range of artistic and economic possibilities that the format of reactive music affords.

In short presentations, current music gadgets and music applications for mobile electronic devices developed by artists and designers will be introduced. Afterwards, the editor of De-Bug magazine, Thaddeus Hermann, and the participants will discuss the artistic and economic potential of these new formats and applications. Are they used as an independent artistic medium, or are they merely expansions and accessories of known formats? Do they open up new artistic perspectives and new earning opportunities? How does the collaboration between artists and technology developers work? What has been the experience so far, and how do the panelists foresee the near future of this field?

We will be at the forthcoming Music 4.5 event in London on the 4th of March 2010. Robert Thomas will be doing a short talk about the vast potential for change that music becoming software enables and our vision at RjDj about reactive music for the 21st century.

More than a week after the earth convulsed in Haiti, it’s survivors are still waiting for relief. Artists and musicians around the world are moved by the suffering and try to support the Haitians. The Kids on DSP and pharmacopia are donating the revenue of their sales in the month february to the Red Cross.
