Creating a scene for RjDj requires a different way of thinking about music. There are so many possibilities for the control and generation of music with RjDj that sometimes it can be both amazing and bewildering !
RjDj uses Pd (Pure Data) as the engine that runs its scenes. It’s a real-time graphical programming environment for audio ( as well as video, and graphical processing ) that was originally developed by Miller Puckette and company at IRCAM. Although it is an open source software project that has many contributors.
Pure Data can look complex at first, but you will pick it up in no time ! Here are some initial resources to help you learn (more soon !) :
A great “how to” in Make : Online
Flossmanuals – great Pure Data tutorials
Andy Farnell also is the author of “Designing Sound”, a wonderful book on sound design with Pd. Its first 100 pages or so contain one of the best Pd introductions every written and you can get them as a free PDF on the book website: http://aspress.co.uk/ds/
Finally www.pd-tutorial.com has nice tutorial written by the composer Johannes Kreidler.
When developing scenes for RjDj, its best to keep the capabilities of the iPhone platform in mind. The goal is to create interesting musical effects with optimized use of processor resources.
We are also doing sprints on several locations. Sprints are group creative sessions which are a wonderful time to get scenes done. We are currently bundling scenes with the distribution of the RjDj app. So if you have made a scene you think we should bundle, submit it here. If you know how the iPhone works, we can also show you a way to get your scenes on the device directly.
Enjoy your scene making we can’t wait to hear the results !
