The idea for RjDj was born way back in 1999 but i than decided to concentrate on a different project: I co founded last.fm. The reason for not doing RjDj in 2000/2001, when we started last.fm was that i thought the time, market and the technology is not up for something like RjDj… which i think was the right decision. Anyway, i think right now is the perfect time for RjDj. Why is that?

• Because nothing really spectacular was happening in the music scene in the last 8 years and normally there is something spectacular happening in the music scene every 8 years. We are now in the 8th year and i don’t think i missed something this year so far….
• Because music is all around us and it was never easier to get music. The more you get the less you are interested in it. It’s just there. So it is about time to get aware of the “just there factor” in this new environment and construct music which is just there and creates a genuine positive effect which was not there before.
• Because i can see the gaming industry developing a massive interest in new interfaces which, after years of absence in virtual space, all point back to the real space.
• Because finally someone managed to get a device produced which is small enough to take with you wherever you are and smart enough to do the kind of stuff we want to do and is a music device as well as an alarm clock and telephone and computer and has sound input and output. Seriously, it was about time, i thought i have to do it myself.
• Because i met Guenter Geiger who is a great music technologist and he introduced me to Paul Brossier and Amaury Hazan who are the strength and power of RjDj.
• Because i was bored of doing web2.0 and thought it is about time to get back into music.
• Because music always was a child of the objects. Everyone knew when he met little music that there must be his mum or dad or both, the objects, somewhere close by. Than music grew up and left mum and dad and was living a life of sex drugs and rock n roll. During this really difficult time, music still kept contact to the objects through digital media, computer and that kind of stuff. Than, all of a sudden, music met RjDj and they totally fell in love. They decided to get married and soon they got their first child, a really lovely little object. Of course, music really loves little object now and they are really close friends. Only this time it is different, object is the child of music.
• Music is much more than just a digital copy of a recording. RjDj brings music back into real space into the context of the listener and his surrounding.
